Young United striker Danny Welbeck is “looking forward to scoring more goals” after netting the winner for his loan club Sunderland at the weekend.
The Black Cats' 1-0 win meant they leapfrogged opponents Bolton Wanderers into sixth place in the Barclays Premier League, ahead of their Boxing Day trip to Old Trafford. Welbeck, who has now scored five goals in his last six games, almost made it 2-0 when his shot struck the outside of the post late in the second-half.
Speaking after Saturday’s win, the 20 year-old revealed Sir Alex Ferguson has kept a close eye on his development at the Stadium of Light.
“I have spoken to him a couple of times," said Welbeck, "but at the moment I’m just focusing on playing games for Sunderland. It’s a great squad here, it’s a family club and everyone is so welcoming, you can just slot in so easily.
“I have been drifting from the left wing to up front but I’m happy to play anywhere on the pitch and get minutes, it is only going to benefit me and I’m just looking forward to scoring more goals.”
Former United defender and Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has expressed his interest in signing the striker on a permanent basis, but is well aware the Reds will be reluctant to sell.
