Park bows out

Ji-sung Park bowed out of what could be his final World Cup as his battling South Korea side were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay in Port Elizabeth.

Skipper Park fought manfully in midfield and was again one of his nation's outstanding players, but the Taeguk Warriors succumbed to two excellent goals from Luis Suarez.

The Ajax forward's first was an opportunistic strike in the eighth minute. Former United man Diego Forlan picked the ball up on the left and sent over a low cross which Korea keeper Sung-ryong Jung allowed to pass him, mistakenly believing the ball was going out of play for a goal-kick, and Suarez gleefully converted from a tight angle at the far post.

After the break Korea came out with more purpose and Bolton winger Chung-yong Lee headed home his second of the tournament after Uruguay had only half-cleared a free-kick.

But just as the game looked set to be heading for extra time in the teeming rain, Suarez curled home a third goal in two games from the edge of the box with 10 minutes left.

La Celeste now go on to face Ghana in the last eight, while Korea's dream of repeating their 2002 run to the semi-finals is over.
