Tom Cleverley was a shining light for Wigan Athletic, albeit in their disappointing 3-1 defeat at West Ham in the Barclays Premier League. The midfielder curled a fine shot past Robert Green in the 86th minute to score his first goal for the Latics, and earlier won a penalty - poorly taken by team-mate Mauro Boselli, saved by Green - after a foul by Danny Gabbidon.
Danny Welbeck continued his red-hot form for Sunderland, scoring his fourth goal in three league games as the Black Cats lost 3-2 to Wolves. The young striker expertly guided a header past Wayne Hennessey to put his side 2-1 up after 77 minutes but just when victory seemed likely for the visitors, Wolves hit back with two late goals from Stephen Hunt and former Reds striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
Elsewhere in the top flight, Mame Biram Diouf was ineligible to play for Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford as they were routed 7-1 by his permanent employers United at Old Trafford.
