"We don't know obviously at this moment in time. We think it's certainly the medial ligament and hopefully that's the worst it is."
- Sir Alex Ferguson
The early suggestion from the Reds' camp was that the defender is likely to have suffered ligament damage after twisting awkwardly when penalised for a foul on Marco Streller. Vidic left the stadium on crutches after being replaced by Jonny Evans ahead of the break at St. Jakob-Park and the manager has admitted he fears the problem is medial ligament damage.
"We don't know obviously at this moment in time," said Sir Alex. "We think it's certainly the medial ligament and hopefully that's the worst it is."
After being injured at the start of the season at West Brom, another lengthy absence for the stopper will be a blow to the Reds, particularly with the hectic festive period on the horizon. Vidic has been in peerless form alongside Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the defence recently and was hailed by ex-Red Denis Irwin as one of the best in the world in his position after another commanding performance at Aston Villa on Saturday.
