"I would like to congratulate Ji-sung Park on his 100th cap. He is a player with outstanding leadership for the team both on and off the pitch. He has done an excellent job for his country."
– Korea coach Cho Kwang-rae
Ji-sung Park will pick up his 100th international cap when Korea Republic take on rivals Japan in the Asian Cup semi-finals on Tuesday.
The winger has missed six United games since departing for the tournament in Qatar following the Boxing Day win over Sunderland.
Appearing largely in central midfield, Ji has skippered the Taeguk Warriors to two wins and a draw in the group stage, followed by a 1-0 win over Iran, to reach the last four. Tuesday’s other semi-final features Uzbekistan and Australia.
The 29-year-old, a veteran of three Asian Cups and three World Cups, has hinted he will retire from international football after his country’s involvement in Doha ends, which can only be good news for Reds fans who have seen him at his best this season.
Park’s international team-mate Koo Ja-cheol cannot speak highly enough of his captain. "I am very proud of him," said the 21-year-old Jeju United midfielder.
