Pearce picks Reds trio

United trio Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck have all been named in the England Under-21 squad for this summer's European Championship.

Coach Stuart Pearce trimmed his 40-man provisional squad on Monday ahead of the June tournament in Denmark.

All three Reds representatives have played key roles in qualification with Smalling even taking over the captaincy when Micah Richards was injured against the Danes in March.

Cleverley helped Wigan avoid relegation on the final day of the campaign while Welbeck has been sidelined with injury at Sunderland but is expecting to regain full fitness in time for the finals.

Spain, Ukraine and Czech Republic are in England's group with Fabio Capello keen for the youngsters to obtain experience of tournament football.
