Manchester United and Crystal Palace paid tribute to the late Gary Speed with a minute’s applause at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Fans from both clubs warmly paid their respects to the former Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United midfielder who died suddenly at the weekend.
Prior to kick-off in the Carling Cup fifth round, Sir Alex Ferguson used his pre-match programme notes to remember Speed and send his best wishes to the Welshman's grieving family.
"I would just like to say that here at Old Trafford we are shocked at the tragic death of Gary Speed at the age of 42," wrote Sir Alex.
"He became part of our football family after settling in these parts as manager of Wales, following a fine career as a true and honest professional. Our sympathies go to his family."
