Ask the average football fan to describe the pivotal moment in last year’s Premier League title race and you can almost guarantee that the words ‘Sergio Aguero’ will be involved.
However, a pulsating game at Old Trafford 22 days earlier – when eventual runners-up United surrendered a 4-2 lead over Everton with eight minutes remaining - could arguably be viewed in similar terms.
The Toffees are again the opponents on Monday night as the Reds commence their bid to regain the title and Sir Alex Ferguson will surely be urging his players to use both disappointments as motivation. United are the 4/5 favourites for victory at Goodison Park (the draw is 13/5 and Everton are 13/4 shots) and the omens look pretty good.
For starters, United boast an extraordinary recent record in opening-day fixtures - just one defeat in the last 16. With no real form to draw upon (pre-season results are a poor guide) this statistic is
