Alexander Büttner believes Manchester United were “unlucky” to lose to CFR Cluj in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
The Dutch defender, starting as part of a youthful and rotated Reds team, also says his side could do nothing to prevent the game’s deciding goal - a long range wonder strike from Luis Alberto.
“We played well and made many chances, but we need to score more goals,” Büttner told MUTV. “They got lucky, they had one shot and it was a goal. We were unlucky with our chances. It was a good goal and we could do nothing about it.
“Their goalkeeper played well and took many balls, both in the first and second half. I think we were just unlucky. We did well and they had one chance and scored one goal. They were waiting to counter attack and they played it well.”
On a personal level, Büttner was delighted to start his second consecutive Champions League match after featuring against Galatasaray, though the former Vitesse Arnhem man admits his thoughts are focused more on Sunday’s Manchester derby.
“I think I played a good game. I gave a lot of crosses but we have to score more goals. What is more important is the next game, which is Man City away. We have to focus on this game.
“I am excited for every game that I play for Manchester United, but I don’t know much about the derby and I will see it next week. We have to do everything to win there and it is important to win this game if we want to be champions.”
