Man of the Match vs City

It was difficult to leave any players out of the reckoning for Manchester United's Man of the Match award in the derby after a superb performance ended Manchester City's long unbeaten home record.

However, we have whittled the choice down to five options after the excellent 3-2 success, leaving you - the readers - to decide who gets the accolade of star man.

Wayne Rooney will be a strong contender after scoring twice in the first half and showing he is in top form with a tremendous all-round display. The England striker now has 150 Barclays Premier League goals and 10 in Manchester derbies in all competitions.

Robin van Persie's free-kick winner in injury time capped another outstanding performance by the Dutchman, who also hit the woodwork and played a part in the move that led to the opener. Somebody who contributed even more to Rooney's first goal was Ashley Young. The left winger was not only a threat going forward, having a goal wrongly disallowed, but tracked back selflessly to do his defensive duties.

Much of Michael Carrick's screening work will probably go unheralded but the midfielder provided a classic example of how to protect his back four by making vital interceptions and displaying touches of quality. Our quintet is completed by Rio Ferdinand, who was in dominant mood in defence and made some exceptional clearances under the most intense of pressure.
