Phil Jones endured an injury-affected start to the 2012/13 campaign but is aiming to make the most of United’s busy festive fixture list – and he says the Reds must do the same having notched a six-point lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.
The 20-year-old Reds no.4 earned his first outing since recovering from a knee injury against Galatasaray in November’s Champions League Group H clash and, in only his fifth match since returning, he was given a taste of Sunday’s scintillating Manchester derby as a late substitute.
After such an epic high, Jones is naturally keen for more first-team opportunities in the crucial coming weeks.
“There are a lot of games coming up and I just want to be involved as much as I can be,” he tells United Review, the Reds’ official matchday programme.
“Sunderland is another really important game for us. They’re fighting for points at the other end of the table so we don’t expect it to be easy at all, but we have to make the most of the position we’re in.”
