Tom Cleverley: Started well enough and looked sharp, always keeping the ball moving, but thereafter struggled with the pace of the game which, after almost four months on the sidelines, was perhaps inevitable.
Ji-sung Park: The stand-in skipper began the night in blistering form, nabbing possession on several occasions and playing a huge part in Chicharito's opener. Latterly moved to the left wing as Scholes and Jones moved into the middle.
Ashley Young: Looked to be finding his way back to full fitness, and drifted in and out of the game. Was sacrificed early in the second period as Sir Alex looked to bolster his central midifeld with Paul Scholes.
Javier Hernandez: Took his first opening of the game brilliantly; shimmying inside his marker and calmly tucking away his finish. Buzzed about throughout but was too often isolated and struggled to hold up the ball as Ajax defenders swarmed around him.
Dimitar Berbatov: Another whose bright start fizzled out. Looked electric in the opening 15 minutes and beautifully released Chicharito to score, but was unable to link up with his strike partner after the break and made way for Welbeck late on.
Paul Scholes (for Cleverley, 61'): Got stuck in and gave some midfield steel, even though his passing was uncharacteristically awry on occasion.
Evans (for Young, 61'): Very bright and confident during his half-hour cameo. Frequently first to the ball and dominant aerially.
