Former United midfielder Darron Gibson did his old employers a favour as his first goal for Everton was enough to beat Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester City, allowing the Reds to move level on points with Roberto Mancini’s men.
The Republic of Ireland international, who scored 10 goals in 60 appearances before swapping Old Trafford for Goodison Park in early January, struck the only goal of the game to seal a dramatic and invaluable win for the Toffees, who move up to ninth in the table.
The defeat for City was their second in five league games and their third defeat in all competitions in January. With United beating Stoke City 2-0, only a better goal difference (+41 to the Reds' +35) is keeping the Blues on top.
