Federico Macheda has returned to Manchester for treatment on an ankle injury.
It is expected that the problem will sideline the young striker, who is on loan at Queens Park Rangers, for the rest of the campaign.
The 20-year-old was signed by former boss Neil Warnock before he was replaced at the Loftus Road helm by Mark Hughes and the recent arrival of the likes of Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora affected his first-team prospects.
However, the Italian did make six appearances in total before picking up the injury but only two as a starter, both in the FA Cup against MK Dons.
Macheda scored for the Reds in the Carling Cup defeat to Crystal Palace this term, from the penalty spot, and will be looking to regain fitness as quickly as possible.
