Rooney voted star man

Wayne Rooney was the unanimous choice for the Man of the Match award at Sunderland.

The Reds picked up the three points that took the title race to the wire, only for Manchester City to score twice in injury time to snatch the title in dramatic, and heartbreaking, fashion.

Sir Alex's side were professional, as always, and got the job done at the Stadium of Light with Rooney grabbing the only goal in the first half with a header from Phil Jones' cross. The England striker could have had more goals, twice hitting the woodwork with free-kicks, forcing a smart save out of Simon Mignolet and squandering a fine chance when a mis-hit by Ashley Young fell kindly for him.

Paul Scholes dictated play in midfield, also striking a post with a fine effort, and came second, albeit some way behind Rooney in the voting.

Raiding right-back Jones earned third spot ahead of fellow nominees Young and Jonny Evans.
