Injury rules Rooney out

Wayne Rooney has withdrawn from England's squad to face Sweden this week after collecting an ankle injury in Manchester United's thrilling 3-2 win at Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Reds' no.10 hobbled out of action in the 79th minute and has subsequently been replaced in Roy Hodgson's squad by Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.

"Rooney got an ankle knock and he's got some ice on it," Sir Alex informed Sky Sports immediately after the win at Villa Park. "We'll see what it's like tomorrow."

Three other United stars are in Roy Hodgson's plans for Stockholm - Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley. Young was replaced against Aston Villa at half-time by matchwinner Javier Hernandez but the switch was thought to be tactical rather than due to any injury.
