Wayne Rooney enjoyed an eventful afternoon. After netting his first-ever own goal, he scored two of United's four at the right end of the pitch to open his club account for 2012/13. He also created the third for Danny Welbeck with an excellent cross from the right wing.
Danny Welbeck himself also impressed. As well as getting off the goalscoring mark for the campaign, he worked tirelessly up front in support of Rooney and Robin van Persie and, as ever, showed some excellent close control when in possession.
Fellow striker Robin van Persie was superb throughout the afternoon. The Dutchman laid on the equaliser for Rooney with a sublime centre from the left wing which was duly nodded home by the England international. Van Persie then got in on the act himself with a brilliantly-taken goal a minute before half-time as he cleverly steered home Antonio Valencia's right-wing cross. And it was van Persie's corner which eventually led to United's fourth of the day.
Both Antonio Valencia, creator of the Reds' second goal, and Patrice Evra deserve mentions for their solid displays in attack and defence respectively on what turned out to be a pleasing afternoon for Sir Alex's men.
