Speak to your average Tottenham Hotspur fan ahead of this weekend’s clash with Manchester United and they will be at pains to explain why their club is one of the biggest in England.

If you’ve got a spare half an hour, the Spurs apologist will regale you with tales of Ricky Villa’s FA Cup final goal, Glenn Hoddle’s cross-field passes and plenty of glory, glory nights at White Hart Lane. With a straight face, he will proudly discuss Tottenham’s ‘great history’, apparently completely oblivious to the contradiction between that statement and the fact that their last top-flight title came in 1961. And if half a century without winning the league wasn’t proof enough, their woeful record against United means Spurs are not fooling savvy punters with their delusions of grandeur.
