There were some notable individual performances in United's 2-1 win against Newcastle, with four debutants (Scott Wootton, Marnick Vermijl, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Robbie Brady) all featuring in defence over the course of the 90 minutes.
Young Michael Keane was solid at the back and coped well with Shola Ameobi’s physical presence, whilst also looking comfortable on the ball against Barclays Premier League opposition.
On the left-hand side, Alexander Büttner built on his promising debut against Wigan and often got forward, offering further attacking options.
In midfield, Tom Cleverley overcame his missed opportunity in the first half to open his United account with a precise finish. Anderson performed well alongside the England international in the centre of the pitch and displayed a high-quality range of passing. Of course, the Brazilian also opened the scoring with a terrific strike from 25 yards.
Wayne Rooney put in a real shift on his impressive return to action. Playing as the attacking point of a midfield diamond, he tracked back to help out his defence and the Magpies found it hard to contain him.
