A rare victory at Anfield came despite a collective display which at times lacked fluency, but there were still some outstanding individual performances in the Reds' ranks.
Rio Ferdinand played on despite suffering an apparent hamstring injury midway through the first period, yet still added another entry to his lengthy list of dominant displays at Anfield. Alongside him, Jonny Evans was similarly impressive, totally negating the absence of skipper Nemanja Vidic.
To their right, Rafael lent genuine urgency and purpose to United's attack, as well as imposing himself defensively. The Brazilian also hit the Reds' all-important leveller, curling home an unforgettable goal with his left foot.
Outside the United defence, Michael Carrick brought an invaluble calm to a congested midfield area. The England international personified the coolness required to emerge victorious at Anfield, and shone as the Reds exploited their numerical advantage.
