Antonio Valencia was the only player credited by Sir Alex with putting in a proper 90-minute performance, even though he was asked to operate in a less familiar role of right-back. The Ecuadorian was responsible for one of United's better efforts on goal, a shot from distance that flew just wide in the latter stages.

Javier Hernandez carried United's main threat to Chelsea until Robin van Persie's introduction and he came agonisingly close to scoring his eighth career goal against them. It could have all been so different had Petr Cech's stunning save not stopped Chicharito from equalising with a header on the hour mark.
