Tom Lawrence netted two spectacular strikes – one surely a contender for League One Goal of the Season – to help Carlisle United to a 4-1 win over Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
Lawrence's first was a 25-yard volley in the first minute to give the Cumbrians a dream start, but it was his second, described by Carlisle's official website as "one of the best goals ever seen" that will be shown again and again over the coming days.
The 19-year-old forward picked up the ball almost 40 yards out and then jinked, feinted and dummied his way past four defenders before firing the ball into the bottom corner. Not a bad way to mark your first goals in senior football.
In a strange twist, however, Lawrence was substituted immediately, while fellow United loanee Ben Amos completed the full 90 minutes in goal for Carlisle.
Lawrence wasn't the only young Red to find the net on Saturday. Defender Marnick Vermijl scored in NEC Nijmegen's dramatic 4-3 win over Roda JC in the Dutch Eredivisie. The Belgian now has two goals this season.
Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard set up Birmingham's second goal in their 2-0 win at Bournemouth. Michael Keane (Derby County) and Tyler Blackett (Blackpool) were unused substitutes on Saturday, while Ryan Tunnicliffe played 90 minutes in Ipswich Town's 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest and Federico Macheda 82 minutes in Doncaster Rovers' loss to Leeds United.
