Preview: Liverpool

Last meeting: Robin van Persie's late penalty sealed United's 2-1 victory over 10-man Liverpool on a poignant afternoon at Anfield, where the Hillsborough victims and families were remembered in moving scenes before kick-off. The Dutchman's spot-kick and a sublime strike from Rafael were enough to overturn Steven Gerrard’s volleyed opener.

Did you know? The rivalry between these two giants of English and European football originates from industrial matters stemming back to the building of the Manchester ship canal in the 1880s, which bypassed the port of Liverpool and led to job losses and discontent on Merseyside.

Opposition boss: Despite making a slow start to life with Liverpool, Rodgers is beginning to see the fruits of his labour at Anfield, adding consistency and cutting edge to the neat passing game that had seen the Merseysiders fail to win several matches from dominant positions this season.  Cool, calm and collected, the Northern Irishman is a keen student of the game and has previously worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea before spells in charge of Watford, Reading and Swansea.

Star man: Although a controversial character, Luis Suarez is ultimately one of the best forwards operating in the Barclays Premier League and will provide a stern test for United’s defence on Sunday. The Uruguayan has almost single-handedly carried the responsibility for scoring Liverpool’s goals this term, bagging an impressive 15.
