Again proving his versatility, he started at right-back against Southampton before switching to a midfield role when Rafael came off the bench.

Completing our list is Patrice Evra, who may have been rested for the two West Ham ties but has been a model of consistency at left-back. Not only is he capable of bombing forward to link up with the attack but his presence at set-pieces this term has been a real bonus. After setting up both goals against Liverpool, when he was desperately unlucky to see his header brush off Nemanja Vidic to lead to the Serbian being credited with the effort, he did superbly to tee up Wayne Rooney's winner in the Southampton clash.
