Manchester United’s first big test of 2013 against Liverpool on Sunday is the perfect opportunity for the Reds to continue a run of strong results in critical matches this season – the key to which, according to Jonny Evans, is confidence and preparation.
Two defeats to Manchester City in the 2011/12 campaign proved costly in the wider context of the title race, but so far this term United have notched victories in four of the traditionally big games of the season: Manchester City (3-2), Liverpool (2-1), Chelsea (3-2) and Arsenal (2-1).
Admittedly, Sir Alex’s side suffered defeat against two of the Barclays Premier League's current top six at the start of the campaign - Everton (0-1) and Tottenham (2-3). Yet while Liverpool are 21 points adrift in eighth place, this remains an important fixture and an opportunity for United to continue a positive trend.
“We’ve beaten Chelsea, Liverpool and City all away from home,” Evans tells Inside United, on sale now. “They’re big games, which we’d gladly take three points from. In seasons gone past we sometimes haven’t been able to get results in those big games, so that is a big boost for us.
