Some of United’s attacking play in the first half warranted plenty of praise at Upton Park, but the Reds had to contend with a fairly persistent aerial and physical barrage from West Ham before Robin van Persie came to the rescue in injury time.
Tom Cleverley take up his place on our Man of the Match shortlist after he hit a superb opening goal in the first half. He took Chicharito’s cross first-time and steered his shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen; Cleverley was also integral to some of United’s neat interchange passing in the first half.
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck turned in one of his best recent performances for United, particularly in the first half, displaying skill and strength in a fast-paced game against a physically powerful West Ham side.
Jonny Evans and Nemanja Vidic complete our shortlist, and though admittedly the Reds’ defence conceded two headed goals as Joe Cole twice teed up headed efforts for James Collins, both Evans and Vidic did well to repel everything else that the Hammers’ front line could throw at them in open play.
