Sir Alex Ferguson appreciates United are in a strong position to reclaim the Barclays Premier League trophy, even if he obviously refuses to take anything for granted.
The Reds may be hot favourites with the bookmakers to land the title but the manager expects his team to be pushed in all of the remaining fixtures. In such an unforgiving division, he also anticipates Manchester City and the other members of the chasing pack to drop points as the campaign unfolds.
"I've said that if you're at the top of the table come the turn of the year, you should be in with a shout of winning the league," he told MUTV.
"That's the position we're in at the moment. We've got a chance and obviously, as it goes, with the countdown [to the end of the season], you then run out of games. Hopefully, when we run out, we're going to win the league.
"But it won't be easy. We dropped two points at Tottenham in a really tough match but we battled ever so hard for the result. Other teams will drop points too. It's an absolute certainty.
"Hopefully that cushion we have at the moment is going to be strong."
