Varela's World Cup woe

New Manchester United signing Guillermo Varela experienced heartbreak on Saturday as Uruguay lost a dramatic penalty shootout to France in the final of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

The right-back, who moved to Old Trafford from Penarol in June, started the game on the bench and only entered the fray in the 84th minute with the score at 0-0, crucially adding fresh legs ahead of the extra-time period. However, the match remained goalless and spot kicks were required.

Disappointingly, for Uruguayans at least, Les Blues were triumphant from 12-yards thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who saved twice to clinch a 4-1 victory at the Ali Sami Yen Arena - where ex-Red Paul Pogba was also awarded the Golden Ball for best player at Turkey 2013.

Varela, who didn’t take a penalty, can hold his head high after an encouraging tournament that saw the 19-year-old feature in all seven matches for his homeland. Of course, he will now look forward to meeting his new United team-mates ahead of the eagerly anticipated 2013/14 season.
