Tom relishes contest

Tom Cleverley is relishing the competition in the Manchester United squad and says he’ll just keep his head down and work hard for his place in the side.

If the Reds are successful in a bid to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, the Spaniard will become the latest addition to a midfield that is already full of talented options.

But Cleverley told ManUtd.com and PA Sport: "There’s always going to be world-class competition and this club’s always going to be linked with big players. I don’t really take much notice of it – I just play my football.

"Sir Alex challenged us every day, so we were always having to impress him. It’s no different under David Moyes. We’re all working hard to impress."

After picking up his first league winner’s medal last season, Cleverley is hungry for more in Moyes’ new regime. And the 23-year-old believes the younger members of United’s squad have the best possible mentors to achieve that.

"The desire from Giggsy, Rio, Scholesy, Wazza... they’ve all won a number of titles and they’re still so hungry to win more," he said.

"We follow on from that – it passes down to us and we want to be here in 10 years saying we’ve got six, seven or eight medals. You’re brought up like that at this club.

"We did really well last year. We didn’t just win it; we won it in style after the previous year, which really hurt us. We want to retain the title now. That victory parade was incredible and it makes us want to win more and more."
