Mixed start for U20 Reds

Manchester United's contingent made a varied start to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey, registering a win, a draw and a defeat between them.

Sam Johnstone kept goal for England in their 2-2 draw with Iraq, a match which fellow Reds youngsters Larnell Cole and Tom Thorpe watched from the bench as unused substitutes.

It had all looked very promising for the Three Lions when captain Conor Coady (from Liverpool) and his fellow midfielder Luke Williams (Middlesbrough) scored a goal apiece just a few minutes either side of half-time. Johnstone played his part in the second strike, his double save turning defence into a quick counter-attack.

However, when the United goalkeeper gave away a penalty in the 75th minute by fouling Mohamed Abdulraheem, the spot-kick was duly converted by Ali Faez and Iraq were back in the game. Parity was then secured by Ali Adnan, beating Johnstone with a low shot in the third minute of injury time.

Meanwhile, in the same group E, United striker Angelo Henriquez enjoyed a successful start with Chile, playing for 58 minutes of their 2-1 triumph over Egypt. The winning goal was scored by the substitute who replaced him, Christian Bravo.

Earlier in the day, the Reds' first summer signing, Uruguayan full-back Guillermo Varela, played the full 90 minutes as his national team lost 1-0 to Croatia in Group F.
