Earlier, Shinji Kagawa scored for Japan but couldn't prevent his team falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Jordan. Japan, who had previously taken 13 points from five group matches, missed the opportunity to become the first side to qualify for the 2014 finals (outside of hosts Brazil).
Elsewhere, Patrice Evra played 90 minutes for France as Les Bleus lost 1-0 to Spain in Paris. The defender almost fashioned an equaliser in the dying stages but his header was well saved by Victor Valdes in the Spain goal. Reds goalkeeper David De Gea was an unused substitute.
Jonny Evans also had a full night's action, as Northern Ireland lost 2-0 at home against Israel. Evans was booked in the first half.
Antonio Valencia's Ecuador beat Paraguay 4-1 in South America qualifying, while Javier Hernandez couldn't find the net for Mexico in their 0-0 draw with the United States of America. Angelo Henriquez was an unused substitute in Chile's 2-0 win against Uruguay.
