Rio Ferdinand has been in the news recently as his excellent club displays have earned him an England recall and his serene and classy display at the heart of United's defence provided convincing evidence as to why Roy Hodgson reneged on his decision not to include him at international level. He had a significant hand in United's goal following a surging run out of defence.
Fellow defender Alexander Büttner also turned in a noteworthy performance at left-back in place of Patrice Evra. It was only the Dutchman's fourth start of the season but he showed that he is a reliable deputy to the usually ever-present Patrice with a steady defensive display.
Ryan Giggs continued his run of form with another good showing in the middle of the park. His vision at times was excellent and his energy levels and willingness to work for the team continue to astound.
The final name on our shortlist is the match-winner, Wayne Rooney. It was a scuffed shot from the United no.10 that gave the Reds the lead and in the end claimed all three points, but he put in a shift and on at least two other occasions looked to be United's most likely scorer.
