Rooney eyes special night

Wayne Rooney is hoping for a special night when Real Madrid come to Old Trafford for the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

The United striker enjoyed the intensity of the first game at the Bernabeu and, with the tie evenly balanced after a 1-1 draw, he is under no illusions about the task facing Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

With such small margins likely to make a difference, Rooney is calling upon the crowd to roar the Reds on to a famous victory.

"The fans are great," he told MUTV. "Especially for the Champions League games. The night games always seem to be a bit more special and I think the crowd always sense when it's a big match and when the players might need the crowd more than in other games.

"The crowd always play their part and, with the atmosphere, it's fantastic to play in so it is a special night."

Rooney will come face-to-face with former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo again and is sure the Portugal international is guaranteed a warm reception.

"It's a massive game for both teams," he stated. "The last game was the first time I've ever played against Real Madrid. To play against them at home with our crowd and with what's at stake, it's going to be a great night and something I really look forward to.
