Preview: United v Chelsea

Opposition boss: An unpopular appointment with some of Chelsea’s own supporters, Rafa Benitez is now enjoying some success at Stamford Bridge, having guided the Blues into a Europa League final meeting with Benfica, and he picked up the Barclays Manager of the Month award for April. Star midfielder Juan Mata says: “We are trying to finish third and have a chance to win a trophy, so maybe the season will look good for us. That will be because of the job Rafa did.”

Star man: Mata, the diminutive Spaniard who has excelled all campaign, is arguably Chelsea’s most accomplished player and was recently named third in the running for the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award. Fleet of foot and slight in shape, the former Valencia star is a ghost-like presence in the final third, floating in the whole between the opposition defence and midfield to wreak havoc. The stats back that up - he’s scored 10 goals and assisted 17 in 35 appearances.

Whistle blower: Fresh from refereeing Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, Howard Webb returns to Old Trafford with a sense of de ja vu, having taken charge of the FA Cup meeting between the two teams in March.
