Robin van Persie has not travelled with the United squad to Germany for Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Bayer Leverkusen, manager David Moyes has confirmed.
A groin problem that forced the Dutch striker to miss the 2-2 draw at Cardiff last Sunday has not cleared up, and he did not fly to Germany with the rest of his team-mates on Tuesday afternoon.
Nemanja Vidic also stayed at home in Manchester. The defender has not played for the Reds since suffering concussion in the 1-0 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford on 10 November, and despite training at the Aon Training Complex on Tuesday morning he misses out on Champions League duty.
"Both are injured. You knew Vidic had concussion, but we don't think van Persie is quite ready yet," said Moyes at his pre-match press briefing at BayArena. "We're going to keep monitoring him. He had a bit of a problem with his groin. Neither are long term, but with the concussion we just want to give it a bit longer."
Phil Jones has travelled with the squad having overcome an injury sustained whilst on international duty, and that boosts Moyes' midfield options with Marouane Fellaini missing due to suspension and Michael Carrick still out with an Achilles problem.
"We have a suspension to Fellaini from the last game and an injury to Michael Carrick," added Moyes. "That is normal at big clubs. You do get injuries with the amount of games we have got. We have a squad which we will be able to use and show what they can do."
