It was Powell's fifth strike this season and helped Wigan climb to 10th in the Championship. Powell signed for United from Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 2012 and played as a midfielder in the Reds' Reserves and first teams last season. At Wigan he's been deployed to great success as a centre forward.
Wigan manager Owen Coyle was full of praise for Powell following Saturday's match and has tipped the teenager to reach the very top.
"Nick took his goal fantastically well," Coyle said. "He's a terrific talent and I certainly believe he will go on to play at the highest level both for Manchester United and England."
Elsewhere, Tyler Blackett played 90 minutes for Blackpool in their 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest. It was the full-back's first loan appearance since securing the month-long move late last week.
Ryan Tunnicliffe played 90 minutes for Ipswich Town in a 1-1 draw at Bolton but fellow Reds loanee Jesse Lingard missed Birmingham City's match with Charlton due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, United's youngsters who are on loan oversees enjoyed mixed results. Marnick Vermijl played 90 minutes in NEC Nijmegen's 2-2 draw with Dutch side FC Twente while Angelo Henriquez suffered a late 3-2 defeat with Real Zaragoza at the hands of Eibar.
Davide Petrucci didn't feature in Royal Antwerp's 1-1 draw with SV Roeselare, while Bebe's Pacos de Ferreira will meet Arouca in the Portuguese Primeira Liga late on Sunday afternoon.
