Evra stars for United

Patrice Evra earned 50 per cent of votes from fans on ManUtd.com and @ManUtd on Twitter to take the official Man of the Match award for his display against Real Sociedad at Estadio Anoeta.

MUTV pundits Lee Sharpe and David May selected Evra, Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling in their shortlist of candidates for the award, but United’s French full-back took the majority of the votes after helping to secure a clean sheet away from home and providing plenty of attacking intent down the left flank.

Evra completed 45 of 52 passes (87 per cent) on the night, with 14 of those in the attacking third. He made several probing runs down his side of the pitch and sent in seven crosses, while defensively he won four of five tackles, made three interceptions, five headed clearances and won three of four aerial duels.

Rooney took a third of the votes (33 per cent) in the poll, while Evra’s defensive cohort Smalling received 17 per cent of fans’ support. Rooney wouldn’t argue with the defensive nominees as United’s clean sheet in San Sebastian was one of the key positives he took out of the match.

“It was important to keep a clean sheet,” he told MUTV. “We need to score the chances we get and that would have made it more comfortable for us but I thought we defended well and limited them to long-range shots, so that was great for us.”
