Van Persie came off the bench after 63 minutes in a double substitution along with Ashley Young, replacing Rooney and Javier Hernandez, and it looked as though the personnel change might sway the game in United’s favour.
Within six minutes of his arrival on the pitch, van Persie had hit a post and fired a shot narrowly wide, then United were awarded a penalty after Young went down under a challenge from Markel Bergara. Van Persie confidently stepped up to take the spot-kick but his shot rebounded off the post.
“Of course [everyone misses from time to time],” Rooney told PA Sport. “Most forwards in the world miss penalties and that won't affect him, I'm sure.
“We're disappointed we didn't get the three points as we had the best chances. Overall, though, we can see the positives. We got a clean sheet and we're still top of the group.
"I think coming away from home in the Champions League is always difficult. But we created the better chances and I feel we should have won the game. A draw wasn't the worst result for us, though, particuarly given the other game finished 0-0 as well. But we're disappointed we didn't get the three points.”
