Manchester-born defender Tyler Blackett has been with United since he was eight, rising right through the ranks at the club.

His height and powerful physique mean he is naturally suited to playing at centre-back, but he also has plenty of experience of playing at left-back and performed both roles after being part of the FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2011.

Warren Joyce has even deployed the local lad in a more advanced left-wing position for the Reserves and Under-21s, where he has used his athleticism and dynamic approach play to create several goals and chances for his team-mates.

The former England youth international played in more Academy games than any of his peers in 2011/12 and began to add booming free-kicks to repertoire, scoring one such set-piece in the FA Youth Cup at Swansea City. After being included on the summer tour, he would have been disappointed with making only 10 starts in the following season but accepted a loan switch to Blackpool in November 2013 to cut his teeth at Championship level.

Another loan, at Birmingham City, followed and he returned in the close season of 2014 with a chance to impress new boss Louis van Gaal. Although it
