Moyes lauds Rooney form

David Moyes has praised Wayne Rooney for the all-round work that has put the striker into an excellent run of form.

The striker, who turned 28 on Thursday of this week, has hit the net five times for United so far this season, and was instrumental in the only goal of the game against Real Sociedad on Wednesday. A weaving run from near the touchline into the Sociedad box ended in a curling shot that struck the post, but Inigo Martinez's touch back into net gave United the lead if not the goal that Rooney's skill deserved.

The outstanding performances for club and country have seen widespread acclaim for the England international this season, but the manager insists that Rooney's displays are testament to the work he has done since returning to training during the summer.

"It’s been great working with Wayne because he's an excellent footballer," Moyes declared at his Friday media conference. "I get asked this question every week but I've told you from day one he's been great, his training has been great. I thought he had a very good game in midweek and we want his form to continue, we want him to keep scoring goals. I’m pleased with him – he’s a big plus for us just now.

"He had to make sure he was the best he could be and he's made sure he’s done that. He's in good nick, his talent is unquestionable, he’s physically very good, mentally in a good place and his form has been good."
