With rivals Ukraine running riot in San Marino, winning 8-0, Rooney set England on course for the three points required to progress and Steven Gerrard ended any doubts late on.
After some disappointing performances at major tournaments over the years for the international team, Rooney is convinced that things can be different in 2014 due to the mix of youth and experience at Hodgson's disposal.
"Brazil is obviously a great football nation," he told TheFA.com. "But we’re not going there as tourists – we’re going there to try and do well and hopefully we can do that.
"There’s an excitement around the team and we’ve got a few games now to prepare for the World Cup so hopefully we can do that right and see what happens.
"The last two performances have been really positive. Some of the young players who have come into the squad have been fantastic for us – there is a good blend."
