Ex-Reds preview cup clash

Mickey Thomas: Let’s bounce back!
“This is always a spicy encounter, but there is more riding on it than usual. Both teams come into the match on the back of poor results. And, of course, it’s always about more than just the result - it’s about the history between the two sides.

“It’ll be interesting to see how Moyes approaches his team selection. Does he go with the youngsters or strength? Personally I think he should play a strong team. We always want to beat Liverpool but even more so after Sunday’s result. We usually respond when we have to and it’s very important we get back on track.

“I’d definitely like to see Wilfried Zaha involved. He’s got great ability and technique, and is a player who will excite the fans. I think we might see a couple of the young lads at some stage in the game, but my gut feeling is that both managers will go for it and put strong teams out.

“I feel confident about the game because we have a squad of top players. Obviously the performance was disappointing on Sunday but the players will know this is a game that could kick-start the season. Some people will say it’s only the League Cup, but I really think this game could spur us on in the next few games.”
