Powell and co ready

Five Manchester United players hope to earn international caps on Thursday as Gareth Southgate begins his reign as England Under-21s manager against Moldova.

Reds youngsters Michael Keane, Tom Thorpe, Jesse Lingard, Nick Powell and Wilfried Zaha are all in contention to start at the Madejski Stadium, where the Three Lions will kick off their qualification campaign for the 2015 European Championships in the Czech Republic.

And having watched his youthful side train at St George’s Park all week, Southgate is excited to start work on developing the next generation of national team players. But more importantly, the former Middlesbrough manager wants them to play his side to play with flair and passion – just like United.

“We’ve spoken to the players this week and it’s not just about winning matches, it’s about the way that we want to play and we’re also part of the development,” he told The FA’s official website.

“Clubs do the majority of that work with their players, but we want this experience to be one that is enjoyable and one that they feel they come away from having learnt something.”

While the England lads are in action, fellow Reds youngster Marnick Vermijl will also be playing for Belgium. And you can read a short summary of how each player performed on after the respective final whistles.
