Butt relishes coaching bow

Nicky Butt is relishing his first competitive match as a manager as he prepares to take charge of Manchester United's youngsters in the UEFA Youth League.

The Reds coach has worked closely with Warren Joyce at Under-21 level but has been handed the task of handling an Under-19 squad by David Moyes with the inaugural European competition starting this season.

Bayer Leverkusen provide the opposition on Tuesday at Salford City Stadium ahead of the senior encounter in the Champions League at nearby Old Trafford.

"I'm really enjoying it," Butt explained to "I've probably been here just over a year now so it's all going well.

"It's good getting a lot of experience and I've been at the club most of my life as well so it's great to be back here and working with people that I have known for a long, long time. All in all, it's a great way to learn my trade and, although I know I've got a long way to go yet, it's going well so far.

"It is my first competitive match. I took a few games in the summer and worked with Warren as well with the Under-21s, but this is the first game I'm taking on my own. I'll have the advice of the other coaches as well around me and obviously the players as well.

"It's something I'm looking forward to. I have a good group of players and it's a very prestigious tournament."

Butt is determined to be his own man despite learning from Joyce and Academy coach Paul McGuinness and is clearly delighted with the faith entrusted in him by Moyes.
