Phil Jones says confidence is high in the United camp after Wednesday’s hard-fought cup victory over Liverpool.
The Reds bounced back from last Sunday's derby defeat with a positive display in a highly entertaining Capital One Cup encounter at Old Trafford to secure a place in the fourth round of the competition. Jones praised the support from the fans on the night and says the result and performance has boosted everyone in the squad.
“It was a great result. We had to win the game, especially having got beaten in the league at Anfield and we obviously wanted to bounce back after the disappointing result last weekend. So it was a positive result and hopefully we can kick on from here,” he told ManUtd.com. “The atmosphere was brilliant but the fans always get behind us. The other night was one of those special nights where you beat your big rivals and the fans are up on their feet singing and cheering. It was a great night for everyone.”
Attentions turn back to league this weekend with the Reds hosting West Bromwich Albion. The last meeting between the two sides in May – also Sir Alex Ferguson’s last-ever match in charge - ended 5-5, but Jones is not expecting a repeat of that incredible result.
"It was one of those end-of-season games where we’d already won the league and they were safe and it was end-to-end right from the first whistle. It was a crazy game which will probably never happen again,” he added. “We reacted well from a disappointing defeat against City and we’re looking forward to the West Brom game. Hopefully we can kick on in the league again and pick up three points to give us confidence going in to next Wednesday’s game against difficult opponents [Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League].”
