Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has heaped praise on Luke Shaw as he continues his return to fitness.
The summer signing from Southampton is yet to feature in a competitive game for the Reds this term after picking up a hamstring injury in training on his return from the club's pre-season tour.
During the visit to the United States, van Gaal revealed he had set up a specific training programme for the 19-year-old in a bid to further enhance his fitness and help him reach the level required at United.
Despite further comments from England boss Roy Hodgson about Shaw’s fitness earlier this week, van Gaal has moved to dispel any doubts over the youngster and applauded him for his efforts since getting injured.
“I said to him in the United States that he came here not fit. So I changed his programme and he did everything that he was asked to do to be fit. Now he is an example in the dressing room and he is training fantastically,” revealed the Reds manager.
“When you want to write something maybe you ask me if he is doing his work or not,” he added during a chat with reporters. “I have read some nasty articles about him. You should know me by now and know that I am open and will answer your questions.”
When asked about Hodgson’s comments over Shaw not being fit, van Gaal said: “Yes, Luke is not fit now
