Nine of United's loanees enjoyed playing time this weekend with their temporary clubs, but only Jack Barmby at Hartlepool United and Marnick Vermjil at NEC Nijegen, tasted victory.
Barmby came on for the last 18 minutes of Pools' 3-0 win over Newport County to make his fourth appearance for the League Two outfit, who now lie just one spot outside the play-off places. Vermijl, meanwhile, played all 90 minutes of NEC's 3-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Although he didn't feature due to injury, Nick Powell watched his Wigan team-mates beat Cardiff City 2-1 in the FA Cup, with another United player, Wilfried Zaha, impressing on the wing for the Bluebirds. Zaha was involved in Cardiff's equalising goal (scored by former Reds striker Fraizer Campbell) and tested Latics goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi late on.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone came within a minute of winning with Doncaster Rovers, only to see Barnsley striker Nick Proschwitz convert a low cross to level scores at 2-2 in the Championship encounter and bag his second of the day.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Federico Macheda played 90 minutes in Birmingham's 2-1 defeat at home to Huddersfield. Neither Tom Thorpe nor Tyler Blackett, also on loan at Birmingham, featured in the fixture, although ex-Red Oliver Norwood did well for the Terriers, scoring Huddersfield's opening goal after only 10 minutes.
Carlisle's match at Crawley was postponed due to wet weather and safety concerns, robbing Sam Byrne and Charni Ekangamene of the chance to gain more experience at League One level. Meanwhile, Jack Rudge wasn't in Torquay's squad as The Gulls lost 3-1 away at Chesterfield. The result leaves Torquay second from the bottom of League Two, with a crunch clash against fellow strugglers Accrington Stanley up next.
