Young forward Tom Lawrence curled home a stunning free-kick for Carlisle on Saturday, but couldn't prevent the Cumbrians falling to defeat against Crewe Alexandra.
Fellow Reds loanee Ben Amos conceded twice at the other end at Gresty Road, leaving Carlisle in 15th place in League One. It was Lawrence's third goal for the club since arriving on loan in late November. His other two – also spectacular efforts – were scored last month against Tranmere.
Elsewhere on New Year's Day, Michael Keane and Nick Powell were on opposing teams when Derby County and Wigan Athletic met at the iPro Stadium. Both men played 90 minutes but Powell ended the day happier as Wigan won 1-0 thanks to a Jean Beausejour strike.
Ryan Tunnicliffe and Ipswich Town were a minute away from victory against Charlton Athletic before a late goal earned the visitors a point, while Tyler Blackett tasted defeat at Sheffield Wednesday and Federico Macheda was on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline with Doncaster at Queens Park Rangers.
Jesse Lingard was suspended for Birmingham City's clash with Barnsley.
