Thorpe secures Blues loan

Manchester United defender Tom Thorpe has joined Birmingham City on loan for the remainder of the season.

The dependable centre-back has been captaining the Under-21s and was on the three-man shortlist for the Player of the Year prize at Reserves level last term. The 21-year-old local lad has been a model of consistency at the heart of defence and will relish a first taste of senior action with Lee Clark's Midlands side.

After linking up with his new team-mates on deadline day, Thorpe will hope to make his debut in Saturday's Championship clash against Derby County - the club where his sometime defensive partner with the Reds, Michael Keane, was on loan recently.

Birmingham benefited from Jesse Lingard's successful spell at St Andrew's earlier in the campaign.
