Nick Powell was the only Manchester United loanee to win in the Football League this weekend, helping his temporary employers Wigan Athletic to beat Bournemouth 3-0 at the DW Stadium.
Although the young forward missed a couple of chances to join Marc-Antoine Fortune, Jordi Gomez and Elliott Ward (own goal) on the scoresheet, he can feel pleased with another 90-minute shift – especially after helping to tee up the first goal for Fortune by driving the ball into the penalty area.
Michael Keane’s birthday weekend began in unfortunate fashion as he played in Derby County’s 4-1 drubbing away to Leicester City on Friday night. The young Reds centre-back, who turned 21 with twin brother Will on Saturday, was on the pitch for the full duration as the table-topping Foxes extended their lead over the Rams to ten points. The Keanes’ former United team-mate Ritchie De Laet opened the scoring for Leicester and later gave Derby hope with an own goal before finishing comfortably on the winning side.
Keane and the Rams remain in the Championship’s play-off berths, in fourth position, but Ryan Tunnicliffe’s loan club Ipswich Town sit just outside after losing 3-1 at home to third-placed QPR. All the goals came in the second half at Portman Road where Tunnicliffe played the entire game.
